Simple steps you can take to becoming a more sustainable person.

It seems like everywhere we look now there are more people becoming sustainably aware, and realising that the everyday choices we make have an impact on our planet! This is awesome!

But what does it mean to be living a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle?

It’s simple, it’s living a lifestyle that isn’t causing harm to the environment. Believe it or not, it is possible to make lots of small changes to your everyday life, that can have a big impact.

RECYCLE

Such a simple thing, but recycling can make such a big difference. By recycling paper you are saving trees and forests, recycling plastics means less new plastic is created and in turn you are saving the environment and animals. So much plastic ends up in the ocean each year and recycling can reduce this. Recycling glass reduces the need to use raw materials such as sand, in some areas of the world these supplies are starting to run low. If you haven’t already get a recycling box and start today.

EAT A MORE PLANT BASED DIET

Now this does not mean you have to become a vegetarian or vegan, but eating less meat in a week actually makes you feel a lot healthier in yourself, as well as helping the environment.

For farms and land to be prepped for animals to live in, trees have to be cut down, water and soil is lost from the lack of crops, and eventually the farmland gets covered in animal waste, which in turn pollutes rivers and streams. Cows alone need to eat 16 pounds of vegetation for them to be converted into just 1 pound of beef to eat (crazy right?!) and to produce just one hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles!! So by cutting down on the amount of meat you eat, you are making a huge difference.

USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT, WALK OR CYCLE

With Covid still upon us, I know that public transport is probably off the cards for most people. But consider walking or cycling to work if you can, as by doing this less emissions and gases are being pumped into the air, therefore helping and reducing the impact of global warming. Plus walking and cycling is much better exercise for you and great for mental health!

DITCH THE PLASTIC

Common sense right? You would think so, but the amount of people that still use single use plastic bottles is crazy. Invest in a reusable water bottle and you will not only be saving the planet but also money. Personally, I believe the best bottles are the ones you can have hot or cold drinks in (stainless steel). Keep an eye out for Aurora's very own metal water bottles, coming soon! Another ‘plastic free’ item would be a coffee cup (not many people are aware but coffee cups are unable to be recycled due to the plastic inside). Now, given the pandemic we need to support the businesses that are open, but maybe when you go out for a walk take a coffee mug or flask with you instead of buying one when you are out, to reduce waste.

These four simple changes can make the world of difference. As the famous David Attenborough once said... “We can now destroy or we can cherish, the choice is ours.” By making these small simple changes to your everyday life, you are not only positively impacting your life, but also making a difference to protecting and cherishing the beautiful planet that we live on. Let’s not destroy it, let’s continue to love and protect it!
