How to host the perfect Galentines Day for your Gal Pals and practice self-love

For some, the prospect of Valentine’s Day, celebrated on the 14th of February sends a rush of joy as they prepare to spend the day by showering their significant other with gifts as a declaration of their love. For others, February 13th (a day prior to valentine’s day) is a far more exciting event - Galantine’s Day. As the name suggests, Galantine’s day is a day to celebrate female friendships.

Our friends are the people we chose to surround ourselves with and those we chose to help us figure out life. They are there through the ups and downs, your gal pals are the ones who know you better than anyone! If you’re as lucky as me, my friends have stuck by me through the years; through primary school, high school, sixth form, and now a pandemic, so they are definitely worth celebrating!

I’ve prepared a few ways you and your gal pals can celebrate this holiday season!

For those of you lucky enough to be able to celebrate outdoors this year, here are some in-person get-together ideas:

  • Try out a new restaurant or bar in your area - or venture away from home to find a new place!

  • Sweat it out in an exercise class. From experience, I recommend a cycling class with the gals! It's always so much fun and you get to work up a sweat, which will always be rewarding! Or, if you are seeking something more relaxed how about a yoga class?

  • If she’s an office pal, do something nice and tie a balloon to her chair or leave flowers on her desk!

  • Book a staycation or mini-break together! Spending time exploring new destinations with your friends is so much fun.

If you're still cooped up indoors and can’t get together, there are still lots of fun ways to celebrate Galentine's Day. How about…

  • Getting dressed up and sipping wine together over a face time call!

  • Having a Netflix Party and watching a movie together – I’m going to be watching the film ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved’ on a zoom call with my friends this year!

  • Posting them something in the mail! Maybe send over a personalised galantines day card, a bouquet of flowers, or a sweet treat to make them smile.

How to practice self-love and be good for yourself?

As important as it is to spend time with your friends on galantines day and spread love, it’s even more important to love yourself before you can truly love anyone else. Caring for yourself is a necessity, rather than a luxury, in today’s society. It allows you to be the best version of yourself which will, in turn, brighten all the people who surround you.

It’s easy to love yourself when things go as planned. Success is often seen as a motive for other people to show their appreciation for you, a way to gain praise and acceptance from those around you, which in turn makes you love yourself. Whereas when things fall apart, and people no longer praise you for your achievements, you can also see yourself as lesser than you once were. This is your self-esteem.

Here are some ways to learn to love yourself and boost your self-esteem!

  • Know yourself: write down everything that you like about yourself, all the hidden talents you sometimes push aside, and all the things people compliment you on.

  • Practice gratitude: Gratitude is the simplest way to focus on all the good in your life. Write down all the things you're grateful for each morning and you will quickly see that even the smallest things, such as a perfectly made cup of coffee in the morning or the feeling of fresh bed sheets are something to be grateful for.

  • Celebrate and reward yourself: This is the fun part of self-love - rewarding yourself! Celebrating your achievements, no matter how small they may seem, is so important. You are strong and beautiful.

I hope whether you are celebrating Galantines Day or Valentine’s Day that you are able to spend the day with people who love you no matter the distance!
